It’s just to the become this begins to fall apart, although slap-right up finale rescues they in the ‘red’. Admirably staged and you will wisely dialogued, it’ll have no higher difficulty for the way of life down their incredibly unsightly term.” [ 8 ]
Monthly Movie Bulletin told you “The film motions during the a simple pace, brand new talk try slick and you may characterisations generally productive. The newest film’s publisher and you may manager, Robert Rossen, sets up an excellent multidimensional chess video game, getting mortal bet, between Johnny, his workplace (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s wife (Ellen Received), a beneficial cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you may a scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whose aunt (Nina Foch) spent some time working at gambling establishment and you may old good corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). The fresh caustically epigrammatic software, the fresh cast’s suavely controlled body gestures from like and you can danger, and you may Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and fashionably assertive photographs (including their political conscience) make this pugnacious but really intricate spectacle a hidden classic of your own category.” [ ten ]

Pic possess actions and you may anticipation, and you can specific short matches out of laughs to include flavor. Ace shows from the Penis Powell, since the a betting home overseer, and you will Lee J. Cobb, once the an authorities inspector, along with in the score . While the patch observe a common pattern, the characterizations are new plus the shows suitable in order to overbalance. Dialog are terse and relevant, avoiding the emotional, phoney reach. Uncommon camera angles arrive now and then so you’re able to heighten interest and you may temporarily stop the interest. Good teamplay because of the Robert Rossen, increasing once the director-scripter, and Milton Holmes, completely new creator and you can affiliate manufacturer, together with supports making it a delicate manufacturing.” [ eleven ]

Evelyn Keyes takes on the great nothing lady which brings about the latest finest in him and you can Ellen Received is the smooth and you can slinky vixen exactly who gets him on jams. Thomas Gomez is greasy since the villain and Lee J. Cobb do an alternate in a position trip since a weary cops inspector just who fundamentally shuts the outcome. A great amount of ingesting and you will smoking is carried out by the all the alarmed.” [ twelve ]
